For all the bad press that GM got for its fuel-guzzlers which were partly blamed for the corporation's downfall, it now has something that is just the opposite to offer a production car that can go the equivalent of 230 US miles per gallon, equivalent to 97.8 kms per litre of 276 UK mpg. It's the Chevrolet Volt electric car which is due to begin production in late 2010 and and the claim is based on development testing using a draft EPA (the US Environmental Protection Agency) Federal fuel economy methodology for labeling for plug-in electric vehicles.
GM has announced that the car can go up to 65 kms on electricity from a single battery charge and be able to extend its overall range to more than 480 kms with its flex fuel-powered engine-generator. According to U.S. Department of Transportation data, nearly 8 of 10 Americans commute fewer than 65 kms a day. [Article continues after AUTOCAR ASEAN banner]
